Berlin agrees to a Turkish request to sue the author of a poem ridiculing Erdogan
German Chancellor Angela Merkel Friday decided to approve the request to start criminal prosecutions demanded by Turkey against the author of a poem ridiculing the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, but they announced that they want to cancel the provision allowing these prosecutions.
Merkel said that “the federal government would give its consent in this case,” but added that it will reform the Penal Code to abolish Article 103, which specifies a prison sentence of three years for those who insulted representative of a foreign state.
